I was born in Mount Kisco, New York to parents Douglas and Farimah Schuerman . My father, an electrical engineer, moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Chappaqua, New York in grade school. My mother , an educator, emigrated to New York City from Tehran, Iran at age four.
I spent most of my childhood raised in the family home of my father in Chappaqua, NY. In early grade school I lived for a time in Pakistan and also in Argentina where awe relocated for my father’s work. These experiences fostered a lifelong fascination with cultural themes, in particular the undercurrents of humanity that cut across cultures throughout the world.
Both parents being great admirers of the arts, frequent trips to museums in New York City were a regular family activity. This exposure encouraged me to begin drawing and painting at an early age.
Since childhood, I was acutely fascinated with my own dreams. They were a frequent topic of conversation at the breakfast table before school. As a teenager, I would sketch them out and write them down, often using them as inspiration for paintings.
After graduating from Horace Greeley High School, I began studying at Syracuse University School of Architecture in the fall of 1991. After several years studying architecture, I changed the direction of my studies, graduating with a BA in Anthropology from the university’s Maxwell School, with a focus in Archaeology.
In 2004, I relocated to Costa Rica were I continued to explore my passion for the visual arts. There I designed and built a house, managed property, gave art instruction to children and adults, as well as exploring on my own artistic pursuits.
I returned to the U.S. in 2022. Much of my recent work has shifted towards realism since studying oil painting at The Art Student’s League in New York under the instruction of renowned painter, Ricky Mujica.
I currently reside in the Huntsville, Alabama where I have a studio at the locally renown Lowe Mill Studio. If you are in the area, please drop by and visit me in studio 305.
